Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) codes are the categorical arrangement of members of the military. These codes defined the primary job of the soldier. These codes greatly expanded during World War II, Some codes changed or evolved, but they are an important but oft overlooked tool for the researcher. If you have a discharge (DD-214) of a family member, look at box 30. The code and name for that code are located in this box. This is the primary job that the person was trained to do. Maybe you have a copy of a document, for the Army maybe it was a General Order or Special Orders document. Besides some of the names on the document you might see a 1-4 digit number in ( parenthesis ), these denote their MOS. Visit the following page for more help with researching a veterans history.
A Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) is a term primarily used by the United States Army and other branches of the U.S. military to refer to a specific job or role within the armed forces. MOS codes are numerical designations that correspond to specific military job titles and functions. Each MOS code represents a unique skill set, training, and duties that a service member is trained and qualified to perform.
For example, in the U.S. Army, an MOS code might represent roles such as infantryman (11B), combat medic (68W), military police (31B), or signals intelligence analyst (35N). In other branches of the U.S. military, such as the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard, similar terms like Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) or Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) are used to refer to specific job roles.
MOS codes play a significant role in military organization and readiness. Service members are trained extensively in their respective MOS to develop the skills and knowledge required to perform their duties effectively. These codes are also used for assigning personnel to units, determining promotions, and managing career development within the military.
It's worth noting that while the specific terminology and code systems might differ between branches of the U.S. military, the concept of designating specific job roles with numerical codes is common practice to ensure clear communication and organization of the various roles and responsibilities within the armed forces.
During World War II, the United States Army used a different system for designating occupational specialties than the modern MOS system. The World War II system was known as the Military Occupational Classification (MOC) system. While the specific codes and designations varied during the war, here is a list of some common World War II MOCs and their corresponding job titles:
