Howard Carpenter Eggleston served in the US Army for 30 years.  He served in Vietnam and Korea, earning the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, the defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.

His command and staff positions included Chief of Staff, First U.S. Army, Commander Division Artillery and later, Chief of Staff with the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas, member of the Nuclear Contingency Branch, Operations Directorate, J3 of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Commanding General of VII Corps Artillery in Europe.

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Howard K. Eggleston (ASN: 0-30271), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility, during the period from June 1963 to December 1965. [This award supersedes award of the Legion of Merit (Third Oak Leaf Cluster) to General Eggleston for exceptionally meritorious service during the period June 1963 to September 1964 as announced in General Orders Number 36, Headquarters, Department of the Army, dated 5 November 1964.]

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Legion of Merit to Brigadier General Howard K. Eggleston (ASN: 0-30271), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from June 1963 to September 1964. [This award was revoked and upgraded to the Army Distinguished Service Medal under Department of the Army, General Orders No. 2 (1966).]
