Carey Mullins Buie, Jr. from Kopperl, Texas. A graduate of North Texas Agricultural College and Texas Tech, Buie was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in March 1943. He was assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines of the 4th Marine Division. As a platoon leader; he experienced his first combat during the Battle of Kwajalein in January-February 1944. In his next combat, he landed on Saipan on 15 June, beach designation “Yellow Beach” under heavy Japanese opposition. Under his own initiative Lt. Buie, moved ahead of his men to help position supporting tanks then was leading his men on the first Marine attack when he was killed in action, 16 June 1944.

We travel all over Texas; whether to take possession of a donation or perform a school or corporate visit with our mobile museum. We also stop in at estate sales and antique malls. As with all things there is a collector market for militaria and we do make acquisitions of this type because you never know what might fall into your lap. This is one of those stories, a story of history rescued.
A few years ago a couple of our directors were traveling in central Texas where they spotted a local antique mall. They encountered a uniform and other small artifacts of interest. What followed confirms our mission of Saving Military History One Soldier at a Time. This time it is that of a young Marine.
Research into the man to whom this uniform belonged revealed that his name was Carey Mullins Buie, Jr. from Kopperl, Texas. Nobody at the mall knew anything about him; but we rescue history.
