The 1st Brigade of the 5th Infantry Division was reorganized at Fort Carson, Colorado, in March 1968 into a unique combination of heavy firepower and mechanize d mobility for Vietnam deployment and was posted to the I Corps Tactical Zone.  The brigade moved a few miles south of the DMZ to the Quang Tri area for search and clear, cordon and sweep operations.  From time to time it became involved in 3rd Marine Division operations on the Khe Sanh plains and up to the vicinity of the DMZ with the U.S. Marines.  In January 1971 it initiated an attack toward Laos with an armored cavalry/engineer task force on two axes from the Vandegrift Base Camp toward Khe Sanh, allowing a South Vietnamese attack across the Laotian border in Operation LAM SON 719.  The brigade was withdrawn from Vietnam in August of that year and rejoined its parent division at Fort Carson.
